Maruthur Gopalan Ramachandran, popularly and affectionately called Makkal Thilagam M.G.R., the legend in Tamil nadu, reined the Tamil film industry from the year 1935 on his first film debut in SATI LEELAVATHI directed by ELLIS DUNGAN, an American. M.G.R. is also called as KODAI VALLAL (king of charity), as he helped many poor general public and also technicians, actors of Tamil film industry for their children's education, livelihood and medical treatment.
The box office hit film ENGA VEETTU PILLAI, a blockbuster movie made heavy and record collections in the year 1965 and MGR performed dual roles.
He acted upto MADURAIAI MEETTA SUNDARA PAANDIAN, entered in active politics in the 70s after this film and became the Chief Minister of Tamilnadu.. He died at the age of 70 in the year 1987. Still he lives in many Tamil hearts as MAKKAL THILAGAM.
